Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe- Cactus inicio, en 1978, como una estación de los SS. Pedro y Pablo en Dumas. Our Lady of Guadalupe- Cactus began, in 1978, as a station of Sts. Peter and Paul in Dumas. By 1981, Our Lady of Guadalupe was listed in The Official Catholic Directory as a mission of Sts. Peter and Paul. A grant was awarded by The Catholic Extension Society in 1988 for the construction of Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel in Cactus. The chapel was blessed and dedicated on December 10, 1988. Since January 1995, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission has been served by the priest in charge of St. Joseph's in Stratford.

As part of the Home Missions Program of the Diocese of Amarillo, the Misioneras Catequistas de San Jose (Missionary Catechists of St. Joseph), a diocesan institute from the Diocese of San Luis Potosi (Mexico) arrived November 16, 1999. They were formally welcomed at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Cactus on March 20, 2000. Fr. Darryl Birkenfeld, pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Stratford, says that the presence of the Catequistas has already made an impact on the Cactus community. "

There are 4,000 people in the Cactus/Etter area, and approximately 98 percent are Catholic. This area has a large concentration of Catholics who have been historically under served. With the Sisters here, the people feel more of a presence of the Catholic church." (West Texas Catholic, April 2, 2000, p.3).
